Lettersmith is a crossword tile word game for 2 to 4 players. Each turn you place letters from your rack of seven in one line on a 15 by 15 board, joined to the words already there. Rare letters score more, the bonus squares double or triple a letter or a whole word, and using all seven tiles at once earns 50 extra points. Highest score at the end wins.
Words are checked against a list of about 270,000 English words. You can have plays checked as you make them, play in challenge mode where opponents dispute your words, or switch the dictionary off. Bots play with a strong or casual vocabulary, so a quiet evening against the computer is as easy as a game with friends in other cities.

How to play Lettersmith
Draw seven tiles
Everyone draws a rack of 7 letter tiles from the bag. Blank tiles can stand for any letter.
Open on the star
The first word must cover the star in the centre and be at least two letters long.
Place in one line
On each turn, place tiles in a single row or column so they join the words already on the board.
Score every new word
Add up the letter values of every word you made. 2L and 3L squares multiply a letter, and 2W and 3W squares multiply the whole word.
Refill or swap
Draw back up to 7 tiles. If your rack is poor, you can swap tiles with the bag or pass instead of playing.
Finish the bag
The game ends when someone plays their last tile after the bag is empty, or after six scoreless turns in a row. Highest score wins.
Tips
- A short word that puts a high-value letter on a 2L or 3L square often beats a long plain one.
- Keep a mix of vowels and consonants, and swap when your rack is hopeless.
- Save S tiles and blanks for plays that hook onto a word and score two words at once.

How do you play Lettersmith?

Which dictionary does Lettersmith use?
Words are checked against a list of about 270,000 English words. With auto-check on, a play with a word that is not on the list is refused and you try again. The host can also pick challenge modes or turn the dictionary off and agree house rules at the table.
How does challenging a word work?
In Challenge mode any play goes on the board first, and the other players accept or challenge it. If a word isn't on the list, the tiles go back to your rack and you score nothing. If every word is valid, the play stands and the challenger loses their next turn. In Free challenge, a wrong challenge costs nothing.
How many players can play Lettersmith?
From 2 to 4 players. For 3 or 4 players the host can choose a bigger 150-tile bag with three blanks, so the game does not run dry too early. Bots fill any empty seats.
Can I play Lettersmith against the computer?
Yes. Choose Practice against bots and play against one to three bots. Strong bots look for the highest-scoring move and manage their rack. Casual bots play shorter, everyday words, which suits new players and younger ones.
Is Lettersmith free, and do I need an account?
It is free and needs no account or download. Open a table, share the code or invite link, and friends join from their browser. Sign in with an email only if you want your results and favourites saved.
Can I play Lettersmith on my phone?
Yes. On a phone or tablet you drag tiles to the board or tap a tile and then a square. On a computer you can also click a square and type the word. Players on different devices can share the same game.
